SRU Athletic Communication Department

Slippery Rock, PA

Pine Richland School District Athletic Department

For this experience, I work with both Jon and Tyler in the Athletic Communication Department at Slippery Rock University. I would assist Jon and Tyler before different sporting events around campus to set up equipment and also double check to make sure the live stream is up and running. I have been working with the Athletic Communication Department for 2 years now and have had nothing but positive experiences while working for Jon and Tyler.

While working for the Athletic Communication Department, I have learned a lot about the person that I am. I learned that I am able to accomplish more than I ever thought that I could. For example, this year I was given the opportunity to commentate both men's and women's basketball games. At first I wasn't sure if this would be what I wanted to do but I know that I knew the ins and outs of basketball so I decided to give it a try. Turns out that I have improved each and every game I commentated and both Jon and Tyler have commented on my performance and enjoyed listening to my inputs and second thoughts during the games.

Gibsonia, PA

For this experience, I worked with the Athletic Director of Pine Richland High School Joshua Shoop. I would assist Mr. Shoop with various activities such as: I was able to sit in on expansion meetings, be able to attend different sponsor meetings and gain experience through working different sporting events such as track and field and lacrosse.

When completing this practicum, I had learned a lot about myself. I learned that I am able to complete a task if I set my mind to it and that I can do anything that I want with a strong support system behind me. Mr. Shoop has a wonderful family and his wife is very supportive of his work, which is why he does such a great job of being a father and also an athletic director. I also learned that people can and will be disrespectful but no matter what, you should always be respectful back because you never know who is watching. I also learned that when the going gets tough to keep on pushing and strive to set personal goals for yourself. On the other hand, I learned that I am able to trust myself in what I am doing and that others put their trust in me as well. For example, Mr. Shoop trusted me to be precise and exact in counting the amount of hours he had traveled plus the amount of mileage he had put onto his car for the entire year.
